Michelle Brennan, Office Manager, Seafood & Maritime Training
Seafood & Maritime Training (SMT) is a not-for-profit, industry-based training provider established in Hobart, Tasmania.
SMT was established in 1986 by the Tasmanian seafood industry as the Fishing Industry Training Board of Tasmania. The organisation was subsequently rebranded as Seafood and Maritime Training to better reflect their customer base and scope of operation.
Most of SMT’s training is conducted at the Hobart Training Centre at Battery Point, however courses are also offered each year in St Helens, Smithton and Strahan. Training is also conducted in other regions where there is a clear industry demand.
We had a student in his 40’s with dyslexia who was struggling with the course that he was undertaking. We heard about the ReaderPen so we thought that we would try it. It made an amazing difference as the student could use it in class and in exams - the earplugs were perfect for allowing him not to disturb the rest of the class and still feel included in the process.
The ReaderPen increased his confidence and independence with assessments. SMT was so impressed that we have given the pen to the student upon completion of his course, and we have purchased a second pen to make available to other students with reading difficulties.
The student was so impressed with his own improvement from the pen, he is now looking into purchasing one for his nephew, who also has reading difficulties.
